Beach? There's no beach in Morgan Hill.

You're right, so why was it named "Rosy's at the Beach"? Well, the answer is simple once know the story about Rosy, the owner and operator of "The Beach", also known as "Rosy's."

In the early days, (yearly 80's), before Rosy became a fish monger, Rosy was earning her MBA at San Jose State University after doing her undergraduate work at the University of Santa Clara. She was SCU's first women's scholarship athlete and captain of the Women's Volleyball team. Being the competitive person that she is, Rosy most enjoyed playing beach volleyball where you're playing with only two per team. It was during this time that she meet and later married Rich Bergin, who was also an avid volleyball player when not being a fish monger in his wholesale and retail seafood business in San Jose. Rosy came aboard with Rich and soon became a fish monger and with her added skills the business grew to include, Gourmet Seafoods, a new (and the best) seafood restaurant/fish market in San Jose's East Foothills. In 1994 they opened "The Shark & Rose", another seafood restaurant/pub in downtown San Jose and then in the late 90's, Rosy & Rich changed the name of Gourmet Seafoods and it's now known as Rosy's Fish City. Do you see a theme in the choice of names?

It didn't take too long before they decided to add a "guppy" or two to the family so now they have two sons, Robert & Patrick. Robert is attending Bellermine High School and still puts some of his yearly childhood experiences from Gourmet Seafoods to practice by working part time during the summer at Rosy's at the Beach. Patrick isn't old enough yet but I'm sure he'll be added to the payroll soon enough.

Wait, I'm getting ahead of my self. Lets take a step back to before "The Beach." In addition to having the multiple jobs of wife, mother, and restaurant owner/manager, Rosy's volleyball career was also growing. Whenever she had any spare time away from her other jobs, Rosy was practicing for or "playing" in the PRO Beach Volleyball tournaments. Occasionally, these tournaments would require her to be away from the restaurant on days that she would normally be working. Those of you that know the restaurant business, know that it's a 24/7 job. Even on the days that are your "day off" your expected to be there. So, whenever someone asked "where's Rosy", the stock answer was "Rosy's at the Beach."

Now do you see where this is going? When Rosy & Rich learned that "The Original Ida's" restaurant in Morgan Hill was up for sale, they decided that they had to buy it. Considerable time was put into deciding what the new name was going to be. The only requirement was that Rosy's name had to be in it. Then someone remembered the stock answer "Rosy's at the Beach" that was given to the customers at Gourmet Seafoods/Rosy's Fish City. The name was now set it stone.
